The Bourne Academy has been recognised for its excellent work in careers and is now one of the top 3 performing UK schools for the Gatsby Good Career Guidance the gold standard of careers guidance measurement.
The Bourne Academy will be seeking re-accreditation for the Quality In Careers Standard, through Investor In Careers. We have held this award for six years. This is an independent quality standard award, with a robust assessment criteria. We are excited to showcase our careers programme.
In 2013, Gatsby was commissioned to research what actions could improve career guidance in English schools and uses eight clear benchmarks as a framework for improving careers guidance. These have been well received by schools, government and a wide range of stakeholders.

Unifrog
All students have access to the Unifrog online careers programme and session are supported in subject lessons, tutor time and to record careers activities. Students can also use this platform to compare every undergraduate course in the UK additionally to international opportunities, including a comprehensive list of apprenticeships including higher degree apprenticeships.
To log in first time students will need a sign-up code unique to their form group.

Work Experience
Work experience is compulsory in Years 10 and 12 - all of these students are expected to participate. They will be given packs and instructions on how to access the database.

Apprenticeships
What is an apprenticeship?
Throughout an apprenticeship, you are able to work and train at the same time and have to do a required minimum of 30 hours per week, usually 4 days work with 1 day training, or block releases. The training provider is usually at college or in the workplace. Apprenticeships are available in a variety of jobs and industry areas, eg hair dressing, beauty technicians, plumbing, carpentry, mechanics.
There are various levels of apprenticeships: Traineeships, Intermediate, Advanced and Higher and they all have the same elements; competencies qualification, technical knowledge qualification and key skills.
What are the advantages of an apprenticeship?
You get real employment experience, and it increases your skills and work opportunities. You could get paid on average £171 per week and receive holidays, pension and travel. You have the opportunity to gain credible qualifications, up to degree and even Masters level, without paying university fees.
Is an apprenticeship for me?
You need to be aged 16 – 24 years old and committed to an industry area or specific job. You will have to show you have researched the area of work you want to do and that you are the right person. You will be responsible and prepared for further study, be happy to work both individually and as part of a team and be able to use your own initiative.
What next…?
Research and register with the relevant training provider or college that covers your specialist area. They may have some employers waiting for an Apprentice.
It is YOUR responsibility to secure a job. Research local employers you are interested in and contact them direct, with a quality CV.

Most Able Students
At The Bourne Academy we are committed to stretching our most academic students. We appreciate the importance of academic ability and also of nurturing and supporting our most able students with their confidence, motivation and aspirations. We offer a variety of activities to support this including Southampton University sessions, additional mentoring, careers support, trips, employer visits and workshops. We work closely with Canford School to ensure our students get the very best opportunities and all the support they need to achieve.
All students are encouraged to consider whether University is the right path for them. Throughout their time at The Bourne Academy 6th Form, there will be lots of opportunities to visit local and regional Universities for open days.
Students will also attend presentations on Student finance, UCAS applications procedure and receive support in completing personal statements. In addition, they will have the opportunity to attend the Higher Education Conference where representatives from over 100 UK Universities are available to speak to students keen to progress onto University. There will be a variety of opportunities throughout their academic careers in 6th Form to attend subject specific insight and taster days at many universities and students are encouraged to visit many different institutions ensure they make an informed decision.
Students have access to careers database and research programmes online and also hard copies of University prospectus are available in the 6th Form common room and library.
The Bourne Academy 6th Form support team will ensure all students and parents are fully aware of the financial support available to students.
