  • The Bourne Academy Success A-Level & Vocational Results 2020

    Published 13/08/20

The Bourne Academy, an all ability state-funded secondary Academy sponsored by Canford School, is delighted with another set of highly positive Sixth Form results and onward destinations data:  21% of overall students have gained a place Russell Group Universities and 18% of students are going on to study medical careers, the highest ever number going into medicine.

This year has been an unusual and challenging year for students in Year 13, where due to Covid-19, learning time was lost and grades have been assessed differently.  Whilst some of our students have had grades moderated, we are delighted that this has not affected their onward journeys, whatever that may be.

Mark Avoth, Principal, said ‘This has been an unbelievably tough year for our Year 13s – they have had so much to endure during the global pandemic and we just want to say how extremely proud we are of their grit and resilience.  They have proved themselves to be mature, self-motivated individuals who have worked tirelessly before and throughout lockdown, to ensure the best possible future outcomes for themselves.  This was not the final year of school that they were promised, but they should be incredibly proud of everything they have achieved.  My enormous thanks goes also to our great body of committed staff and parents too.’

Mr Dean Taafe, Head of Sixth Form, said I am thrilled that all of our Year 13 students, who applied to university, have secured an offer at their first choice university or chosen course of study. Their success is testament to all their hard work and that of staff who have supported them over the past two years. I feel very proud of this young yet successful 6th Form. We are going from ‘strength to strength’.

For more information about The Bourne Academy, anyone is welcome to attend the Academy’s annual Virtual Open Evening on Wednesday 30 September 2020, 6.00pm-8.00pm.  Alternatively, anyone may attend the specific 6th Form Virtual Open Evening on Wednesday 14 October 2020, 6.00-8.00pm.  Morning Tours may be available in October – more information to follow.  Please enquire at the Academy for further details.

  • Talbot Village Trust helps The Bourne Academy community with COVID19 costs

    Published 08/06/20

The Bourne Academy is delighted to announce that they have received a generous £10,000 funding from Talbot Village Trust’s COVID-19 Support Fund. This money has enabled The Bourne Academy to continue its efforts in supporting the community during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The funding has been used to help care for the vulnerable and keyworkers’ children and families in the community. The donation also allowed the Academy to purchase additional equipment required to enable students to continue their learning remotely.

During lockdown, the Academy has been helping our community by schooling children onsite, telephoning vulnerable students and their families and visiting most vulnerable children for an ‘eyes on’ assessment. The students were always front of mind for the Academy as they arranged safeguarding assessments by telephone as well as bi- weekly deliveries of hundreds of work packs around the community for students with no internet access. The Bourne Academy has also prepared and delivered 205 Free School Meals before the voucher scheme, arranged and distributed vouchers and Magic Breakfast food parcels.

Russell Lucas-Rowe, Trustee of Talbot Village Trust and founder of the campaign, said: “We understand the importance and impact The Bourne Academy has on young peoples’ lives in our community. We are thrilled to have been able to help with our COVID-19 Support Fund so that the Academy can keep empowering students to achieve and aspire to the highest standards.”

  • The Bourne Academy Providing Breakfasts for Families

    Published 14/05/20

Last year, The Bourne Academy was selected to join in the National School Breakfast Programme. The programme has since provided a breakfast to every student that wants or needs it at the start of each Academy day. But since the Coronavirus pandemic and the UK wide school closures, the Academy has been seeking new ways to support its local families.

Together with the National Breakfast Programme, the Academy is now able to distribute food parcels to support its families who may be struggling in these difficult times. Funding for the programme comes from the Department for Education and the supplies are being delivered to the Academy by a partnership of two charities: Family Action and Magic Breakfast. The aim of National School Breakfast Programme is that ‘no child is too hungry to learn’.

  • Academy’s Community Governor Drives Miles to Keep Students Learning

    Published 11/05/20

The Community Governor at The Bourne Academy has been driving miles to deliver home working packs to those students in our community with no access to the internet.

Together with his amazing family, Mr Darren Cheeseman of Kingren Groundworks Ltd, has taken valuable days off work ensuring all the children in our community are supported and have the same advantage.

Before the Easter holiday voucher scheme was released, Mr Cheeseman and family delivered lunches, to all our self-isolating Free School Meals families.  Subsequently, he has collected from school, and delivered around Bournemouth, over 107 envelopes and work packs for students with no internet access.  This takes him a long day, every two weeks.  Whilst out in the van, he also collects all the completed homework to bring back into the Academy’s quarantine room, to be marked.

The Academy is indebted to Darren Cheeseman, and his family, for their selfless support during these lockdown weeks.

  • Bourne Academy Makes PPE Clips for Key Workers

    Published 24/04/20

The Bourne Academy is proud to announce that its staff have been using their time and resources to help NHS and front-line care workers.

The Bourne Academy responded to an online call to make clips for the NHS workers to take the stress off the back of the ear from face masks which are having to be worn at all times in medical and care environments – the clips hold the elastic off the back of the ear to stop rubbing.

These clips were laser cut from sheet polymer in the Academy’s Engineering classrooms, and have been welcomed by key workers from our local NHS Trust.

Mike Dunn, Director of Engineering at The Bourne Academy says “The team at the Bourne Academy have been delighted to help those on the front line who are struggling with PPE. The tension release band was requested by a local NHS trust and we’ve posted out 300 in the past week. It’s been a team effort and a small token of thanks to front line key workers working incredibly difficult shifts.”

So far, staff from The Bourne Academy have delivered these clips to local care homes and a team of community midwives.

  • Bourne Academy Hosts Online Concerts Amid UK Lockdown

    Published 22/04/20

Talented musical students at The Bourne Academy are hosting lockdown Rock Concerts online.

When the UK Government announced school closures, The Bourne Academy music team decided that this would not stop musical performances for their students. The Academy was due to have held six concert performances before the end of the academic year, but with social distancing measures in place for the foreseeable future, the events have not been able to take place in the traditional sense, so a decision was taken to host a concert online via Facebook Live.

During the Easter Holidays, students rehearsed and recorded musical performances from their homes. The videos were then put together by staff to create a concert which was streamed online on Tuesday night. The video reached almost 1000 views in the first hour and lead to many more engagements and positive comments from the Academy community.

The project is called the ‘Rockdown Sessions,’ it gives a brilliant opportunity for students to continue developing their performance skills while in lockdown and a chance to share their work with families, staff and peers. The music department was inundated with so many performance videos that they will be hosting a second concert on Thursday night.

Head of Visual and Performing Arts, David Mastrocola says ‘’We are all incredibly proud of the students for taking part in what has been a very difficult time for all of us. Hopefully these concerts will give the students and their parents a degree of escapism for a couple of hours where they can enjoy watching themselves and their peers perform.’’

Part 1 of the ‘Rockdown Sessions’ can be viewed on The Bourne Academy Performing Arts Facebook page. Part 2 will be streamed on Thursday 23 April at 7pm.

  • Bourne Academy Student Elected to Youth Parliament

    Published 06/03/20

The Bourne Academy is proud and delighted to announce that a Sixth Form student, Sarah Lockard, has been elected to the Poole UK Youth Parliament.

This is the first year that a student from The Bourne Academy has taken part in the Youth Parliament process. The entire Academy community rallied behind our candidate, with many students using their vote to supporting Sarah.

Sarah believes that young people need to play a more active role in shaping their future and says in her election video; ‘If you don’t like it, do something about it’. Sarah wants to protect the planet and the animals on it by reducing single use plastics in schools and promoting sustainable living. Sarah is also very keen to improve mental health training for those working with young people.

Staff and Students at The Bourne Academy are so proud of Sarah, who has an exciting year ahead including visits to London.

Principal, Mark Avoth said; ‘We are so proud of Sarah for being elected to UK Youth Parliament. The issues raised in Sarah’s campaign resonated with young people from The Bourne Academy, even receiving votes from other schools. The Bourne Academy is already working to reduce use of single use plastics on site and our staff are continually developing skills to deal with mental health issues in young people’.

Recently, The Bourne Academy hosted a speed networking event focused on student mental health. The Bourne Academy organised a ground-breaking event where key front line and pastoral staff from the academy liaised with representatives from relevant local care services.

  • Speed Networking Event Focused on Student Emotional Health

    Published 25/02/20

The Bourne Academy organised a ground-breaking speed networking event where key front line and pastoral staff from the Academy liaised with representatives from relevant local care services.   The aim of the event was to share knowledge and information about school and community support for young people, and their families, with a ‘low level’ emotional health issues.

The event allowed staff from the Academy to talk in a group, followed by ‘speed dating’ style approach where academy staff got to speak with the healthcare professionals on a one to one basis with staff from; Public Health Dorset, help & Care, citizens advice, Relate, Early Help Operations, School Nursing, Chat Health, Dorset Mind, Mental Health in Schools Team & local GPs.

The Bourne Academy ensures that staff are regularly trained and provided with information which addresses safeguarding and emotional issues with students. Caroline Gobell, Business Director, said ‘This meeting was a fantastic opportunity to cross fertilise and network with local care services – informing them of our process and needs whilst further developing the Academy’s highly dedicated pastoral and safeguarding team.’
